The Global significance of Australia’s Wildlife
Did you know that Australia is home to more biodiversity than any other developed nation on Earth?
Did you know in total, it is estimated that Australia is home to around 7% of all species: this is more than twice the number of species in Europe and North America combined?
Did you know in particular, Australia has more endemic (unique) mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians than any other nation. By way of some examples – Australia has more reptiles than any other nation on earth, 50% of the world’s sharks and rays and 1/6 of the world’s parrots?
The Extinction crisis in Australia
Sadly, however, Australia’s wildlife is now facing an extinction crisis.
- Australia has the worst mammal extinction record in the world – 22 mammals have become extinct in the last 200 years
- More than 1,500 mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and plants are listed as threatened with extinction. In addition, there are over 3,000 ecosystems facing extinction.
It is clear that existing approaches to conservation are no longer adequate – a continuation of “business as usual” will mean Australia loses many more species and habitats forever.
